Autoimmune Disease and Hyperbarics
Approximately 100 conditions fall under the category of autoimmune diseases. The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) estimates they affect roughly 7% of the American population. An autoimmune disease (AD) develops when the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells and tissues, treating them as foreign invaders. Examples include Multiple Sclerosis, where the immune system targets the protective sheath around nerves; Rheumatoid Arthritis, which affects the joint linings—most commonly in the hands and feet; and Inflammatory Bowel Disease, which attacks the intestinal lining. Autoimmune diseases have numerous potential causes and triggers, from environmental toxins to genetic abnormalities. Lyme Disease and PANDAS are two instances of autoimmune conditions stemming from chronic bacterial infections that persist in bodily tissues. Any bodily system or organ can be targeted by an overactive immune system, resulting in chronic inflammation.
Given the wide range of autoimmune diseases and their ability to impact any part of the body, symptoms vary significantly in type and severity. Some cause only mild discomfort, while others profoundly disrupt patients' lives. Certain ADs, such as Type 1 Diabetes, produce persistent symptoms, whereas others—like Psoriasis—occur in recurring "flare-ups." Common symptoms across many autoimmune diseases include swelling of affected tissues, fever, pain, brain fog, and fatigue.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) may offer an effective approach to managing autoimmune disease symptoms, primarily by addressing the chronic inflammation driven by an overactive immune system. For ADs linked to infections, HBOT can be beneficial: the increased pressure and oxygen delivery penetrate deep into tissues, helping eliminate harmful bacteria. Long-term HBOT treatment may reduce the severity of flare-ups and extend the intervals between them. By saturating the body with oxygen, HBOT can alleviate inflammation, reduce pain, and support immune function. Some patients have achieved remission of their autoimmune disorders after incorporating HBOT into their treatment plans. Additionally, many report improvements in mental clarity, sleep quality, overall well-being, digestion, and pain management.
